Tales Of The Treatment Room- The Road To Recovery Begins…

Having started this blog for my journalism degree (Professional Sports Writing and Broadcasting) I chose to focus on a subject which fans don’t really get to hear about and was going to attempt to give an insight to the lighter side of the changing room away from the drama of a match day. I now find myself with a lot of time on my hands, and a different story to tell…that of a player with a long term injury.

After a frustrating start to the season, in which my hamstring injury and the form of Keogh and Tomori had restricted me to only four appearances (two starts, two as sub), I was delighted to be given a start at The Bet365 Stadium on Wednesday. I thought this might be the start of my season and hoped I would be able to solidify my place back in the starting XI…unfortunately it turned out to (pretty much) be the end of my season, in dramatic circumstances.

For those that aren’t aware in the 42nd minute of the first half I ruptured my left Achilles’ tendon.

GAME OVER!
After seeing the specialist on Friday, the diagnosis was confirmed and I’m due to have surgery on Monday.
Having suffered the same injury over ten years ago whilst I was an Aston Villa player, I know what it takes to recover from this and I’m ready to put in the work.

The lay-off for this kind of injury is expected to be six months, so strength of mind is required and a determination to work hard. You can only do it for yourself, nobody will do the work for you!

I used this as my motto the last time and I got myself back and playing in the UEFA Cup and Premier League after five and a half months.

I have tried to remain positive from the moment it happened. I’m focusing on what I can do whilst I’m out of action and trying to be proactive, rather than worrying about what I’m missing out on. I have also taken perspective from the fact that in this same week my former team mate Leon Barnett has had to retire due to a serious heart condition.

My injury is bad, but it’s one I will be given the opportunity to return from. Whereas Leon has not only had to step away from the game he loves, but will have to monitor his condition throughout his life. When I think of this I can only consider myself to be extremely fortunate.

I’m ready for this fight and I’ll be posting updates of my progress throughout.

So sorry to hear about your injury. I ruptured my achilles back in May whilst playing netball, so I completely understand the physical and mental battle that lies ahead of you.

All the best for your surgery and rehab and I hope to see you back on the pitch next season.
